Assignment 1

Choose one of the topics below, research the information needed and then write a report.

1. Length 2 page minimum, no maximum (1.5 spacing). (rough draft & final)

4. Proper grammar, spelling and punctuation are expected.

Topic 1:

Imagine you are an American representative sent to Hiroshima after Japan’s surrender to examine the effects of the atomic bomb. Compile a report of your findings to submit to President Truman. Include written descriptions and photos of the damage to the city and surrounding area. Also detail the human losses – deaths, injuries, cases of radiation sickness, and psychological damage. Write a cover letter that summarizes your investigation. Conclude your business letter with an evaluation of the atomic bomb as a wartime weapon.

Topic 2:

Today Hiroshima City prides itself as city that promotes peace around the world. Research the history of the peace movement in Hiroshima. Write a letter to the Mayor for information and/or ask your teacher for help to set up an interview with the mayor. Also discuss the histories and significance of the 1000 Crane Clubs (Sadako’s and HIS’s). Use HIS’s Japanese language teachers and HIS’s Homepage as resources. Include photos of items/individuals related to the peace movement. Find links and give brief descriptions of international peace organizations throughout the world using the Internet. Include these in your report.

 

Assignment 2

Choose one of the topics below and complete it as instructed.

Topic 1

Make a poster that contains diagrams of "Little Boy" and "Fat Man." Include brief descriptions of how the devices worked. (Use A4 or B3 paper)

Topic 2

Study the political cartoons on the Timeline Poster. Then imagine that you are a Japanese citizen who is living just outside Hiroshima City and it is the day of Japan’s surrender. Draw a political cartoon that captures the mood of the Japanese people. Below your drawing describe what your drawing depicts. Use A4 paper
