Trip to Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF)

Background Research:

In order to make your trip to RERF a truly engaging and memorable event, you will have to research the effects radiation from the A-bomb that was exploded over Hiroshima had on people. Your best source for this task is the Internet.

Assignment 1: Research

1. Use the Internet sites your teacher provides to help you locate the information you need.

2. You will be working in groups of three. Your task is to find out information about the following topics:

  1. The effects of radiation exposure to humans (A-bomb related)
  2. Information about Hiroshima before/during and after the A-bomb was dropped
  3. Information about RERF and its history
  4. Facts and figures about the effects the A-bomb had on Hiroshima (people and places)
  5. Human interest stories about the survivors of the bomb
  6. Any connections to peace-related activities resulting from the dropping of the A-bomb (i.e. 1000 Crane Club)

3. Download any pictures you feel would be useful to our homepage project (keep an account of each site address of each picture you download – we will have to give credit to the owners if we use them in our web page project)

4. Keep an accurate account of site addresses you get information from (we can include them in our web page project)

5. Your group will produce a report on each of the topics listed above (a-f).

6. Length of each report is1 page minimum, no maximum (1.5 spacing). (rough draft & final).

Assignment 2: RERF Visit Reflection

During your visit to RERF you will be given a general tour of the facilities and time to spend with individual researchers.

1. To prepare you for your time with individual researchers, use the research information from Assignment 1 or your trip to the A-Bomb Museum (radiation effects and anything related to RERF) to write a minimum of ten questions your group would like answered.

2. During your time with each researcher ask your questions and keep a record of the answers. Do not forget to get the researcher’s full name and job description. S/he might even allow you to take a group photo (great for your portfolio and for our web page project). Also a thank you card from your group would be a nice touch.

3. Your group will be responsible to produce a written report about your experience at RERF. Your group will present their finding to the class.

4. Length of the report is 2 pages minimum, no maximum (1.5 spacing).

5. Each page should include at the top of the page the following in the order given:
